Crystal Cove Shake Shack

Description: Where Beachside Nostalgia Meets Classic American Bites

Location: Newport Coast, CA

Nestled on Newport Coast, an unassuming coastal gem awaits those seeking a blend of nostalgia, beachfront charm, and tasty American classics. The Crystal Cove Shake Shack is more than just a place to grab a bite – it’s a rendezvous with time-honored flavors in a setting that perfectly captures the essence of laid-back beach life. From sunrise breakfasts to lazy summer afternoons, this casual beach diner beckons with promises of iconic burgers, luscious shakes, and a dose of that unbeatable oceanfront magic.

Pros:

  • Casual Beach Diner
    • Crystal Cove Shake Shack offers an ambiance that effortlessly couples the comforts of a traditional diner with the relaxed vibe of a beachside retreat. The atmosphere invites patrons to unwind and enjoy their meal without pretension.
  • American Classic Burgers, Shakes, & Breakfast
    • Early risers are in for a treat as Shake Shack opens its doors at 7 a.m., serving up hearty breakfasts to kickstart the day. For those with an affinity for nostalgia, the menu features American classic burgers, sandwiches, and hotdogs. And let’s not forget the shakes – creamy, indulgent concoctions that transport taste buds to a bygone era.
  • Fun Summer or Weekend Adventure
    • A visit to Crystal Cove Shake Shack is not merely a dining experience – it’s an adventure. Whether you’re escaping the weekday blues or embarking on a weekend getaway, this eatery promises an escape from the ordinary.
  • Patio Deck
    • Imagine savoring every bite while on the Shack’s inviting patio deck. The rhythmic sound of the waves creates a soothing backdrop as you dine amidst the embrace of the salty sea breeze and beach view.
  • A Gorgeous View of Crystal Cove State Beach
    • As if the mouthwatering food weren’t enough, the restaurant rests on a mini cliff with a view that’s nothing short of breathtaking. Gaze out at the expansive stretch of the Crystal Cove State Beach – an ever-changing canvas of sun, sand, and waves.

Cons:

  • Difficult to Find Parking
    • The allure of the Shack is no secret, which means parking can be a challenge, especially during peak hours. To avoid the parking scramble, consider arriving before 9 a.m. and savoring breakfast with a view.
  • Limited Options
    • While the menu pays homage to classic American flavors, it’s worth noting that the range of options might be more limited than one expects. However, what the Shack offers, it offers with excellence.
  • Not Customizable
    • For those who enjoy customizing their orders down to the last detail, the lack of extensive customization options might be a slight downside. However, the carefully crafted offerings are designed to delight the senses without needing much modification.

In a world where beachside dining often means more than just food, the Crystal Cove Shake Shack stands as a testament to the simplicity of a well-made meal paired with a view that inspires wonder. Despite a few minor drawbacks, this Newport gem invites locals and visitors alike to savor the flavors of the past in a setting that celebrates the present. So, if you’re willing to embrace a dash of adventure and a pinch of nostalgia, this beachfront haven might just become your new favorite escape.

The Cliff Restaurant

Description: Beach Vibes, Serenading Sounds, and Forgettable Feast

Location: Laguna Beach, CA

In the enchanting haven of Laguna, perched on the edge of a rugged cliff overlooking the endless expanse of the sea, lies this gem. The Cliff Restaurant is not just a place to dine; it’s an invitation to savor the beauty of the ocean’s horizon while enjoying a decent meal. From sunrise to starlit nights, this establishment seamlessly blends great service, live music, and an unbeatable view to create an experience that’s as unforgettable as the tide’s eternal dance.

Pros:

  • Seafood, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    • The Cliff Restaurant understands that cravings know no time, offering a versatile menu that spans from sun-kissed breakfasts to sumptuous dinners.
  • Open 7 Days a Week
    • The Cliff is committed to delivering its unparalleled experience every day of the week, allowing patrons to escape into its coastal embrace whenever the heart desires.
  • Full Bar and Happy Hour
    • For those who relish the symphony of a well-mixed drink, The Cliff’s full bar and happy hour offerings provide the perfect accompaniment to the backdrop of waves crashing against the cliffs. Their Margaritas (my personal fav being the ‘Hot n’ Skinny’) and Bloody Marys are great during happy hour (Monday through Friday, from 3 pm to 6 pm)
  • Live Music
    • The magic of dining under the stars is elevated with live music that adds to the restaurant’s ambiance. Tuesday through Saturday, 6 pm to 9 pm, and Sundays from 5 pm to 8 pm, the sounds of local musicians merge with the ocean’s melody.
  • Pet Friendly
    • The Cliff understands that our furry companions are part of our adventures. Pet-friendly seating allows your four-legged friend to partake in the coastal charm. They even offer pet-friendly meals and water so your fur baby can enjoy with you.
  • Valet Parking
    • The convenience of valet parking removes the hassle of searching for a spot, ensuring you step into The Cliff with ease.
  • Great View and Breeze
    • A feast for the eyes and the soul, the restaurant’s location offers sweeping views of the ocean. Coupled with the caress of the sea breeze, it’s an experience that evokes serenity.
  • Casual Ambiance
    • The Cliff manages to strike a balance between sophistication and casual comfort, welcoming both those in beachwear and those seeking a slightly more refined dining experience.
  • Shops Nearby
    • The restaurant’s surroundings hold a treasure trove of shops, creating an opportunity to extend your coastal adventure beyond the dining table.

Cons:

  • Check the Weather Before You Go
    • While The Cliff’s ambiance can charm in any weather, a quick weather check can save you from unexpected surprises. The first time we experienced The Cliff, it began sprinkling toward the end of our experience. Nothing to ruin the mood (if anything only added to it!) but just something to keep in mind.
  • Hard to Find Seating and no Reservations, Only a Waitlist
    • Due to its popularity, finding seating might require a bit of patience during peak hours. The absence of reservations means relying on a waitlist, so be prepared for a wait during busy times. It’s best to call them to find out if they are busy during the day off.
  • Service Drops During Busy Hours
    • As the restaurant fills up, there might be a slight dip in service quality, though the overall experience remains delightful.
  • Forgettable Food
    • While the view and ambiance shine, the food is definitely overshadowed and somewhat forgettable.
  • Parking
    • Outside of valet service, parking options might require a short stroll with some of Laguna’s Public Parking structures.
  • Public Restrooms
    • The availability of public restrooms for both the restaurant and surrounding shops might not align with everyone’s expectations as the restaurant does not offer bathrooms for patrons.

In the heart of Laguna, The Cliff Restaurant lures with a promise of a great view with the symphony of the waves. As with any coastal destination, be prepared to embrace both the sublime and the nuanced in your quest for a memorable dining experience through the view and ambiance of the joys of life by the shore.

The Beachcomber at Crystal Cove

Description: A Tranquil Seaside Dining Experience

Location: Laguna Beach, CA

The Beachcomber at Crystal Cove is a hidden treasure nestled in the stunning Crystal Cove State Park. This beachfront restaurant offers a relaxing and tranquil dining experience, where the soothing ambiance of the beach meets delicious food and drinks. The restaurant is literally perched on the beach, providing diners with the opportunity to enjoy their meal with the sand beneath their feet and the sound of waves in the background. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing, seaside escape.

Pros:

  • Relaxing Beach Vibes
    • The Beachcomber provides a genuinely relaxing beach atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding and enjoying the coastal setting. We went during the morning time for breakfast and were able to avoid the hustle of late breakfast/lunch rushes making the experience even more relaxing and intimate.
  • Great Drinks
    • The restaurant offers a variety of drinks, including an amazing Bloody Mary. Their beverages are mixed well and complement the seaside experience beautifully.
  • Scenic Location
    • Positioned right on the beach, The Beachcomber provides diners with picturesque views. There’s even a small river extending to the ocean with a charming bridge nearby, adding to the peaceful setting.
  • Beach Stroll After the Meal
    • After dining, guests can take a leisurely walk along the beach, a wonderful way to unwind and enjoy the serene coastal surroundings.
  • Ideal for Early Risers
    • Early birds will appreciate that this spot tends to be less crowded in the morning, providing a peaceful and relaxing way to start the day.
  • Healthy Menu Options
    • For health-conscious diners, the restaurant offers a range of healthy options.  With Mediterranean Omelets, Avocado Toast, Shrimp Tacos, and Balsamic salad with poached eggs, the restaurant has a wide variety of options to choose from if you are looking for a healthy option.
  • Beach Rentals:
    • During the evening time, the restaurant even has beach rentals that include firepits, beach chairs, and foods such as S’mores, hotdogs, hamburgers, and kabobs. These rentals go quickly, however, so be sure to book at least a month in advance depending on the season!

Cons:

  • Hike Down to the Restaurant
    • The Beachcomber is situated within Crystal Cove State Park, and reaching the restaurant can involve a bit of a hike. Visitors will need to park in the state park parking lot and then either take a shuttle and walk down to the beachfront cabin (a 2-minute drive plus a 5-minute walk) or walk the full way (approximately a 15-minute walk). While it adds an adventurous element, it’s not accessible-friendly.
  • Distance to Public Bathrooms
    • The restaurant doesn’t have on-site restrooms; guests need to walk to public bathrooms across the river, which can be a minor inconvenience. (The nice part about this trek to the bathroom is being able to see the river and enjoying the views.)
  • Temperature Consideration
    • The coastal location can sometimes bring chilly breezes, so it’s advisable to bring a sweater or jacket, especially during cooler times of the day or year.

In summary, The Beachcomber at Crystal Cove offers a serene and scenic beachfront dining experience with delicious drinks and cuisine. However, the journey to reach the restaurant involves some effort, and visitors should be prepared for the occasional chill from the coastal breeze. Despite these minor inconveniences, the overall ambiance and beach vibes make it a worthwhile destination for those seeking a memorable seaside meal.

C’est La Vie

Description: A Seaside Charm with Sweet Delights

Location: Laguna Beach, CA

C’est La Vie is a charming dining establishment known for its warm ambiance and delightful desserts. Located in a prime spot with a view of the beach, this restaurant offers a pleasant dining experience, especially on its second-floor seating area, which provides panoramic views of the park, beach, and even Catalina Island from the distance.

Pros:

  • Good Service
    • The restaurant had great welcoming service with knowledgeable servers and attentive staff. However, it is important to note that the service quality can decrease during busy times when staff become preoccupied.
  • Great Desserts
    • C’est La Vie is known for its delightful desserts, making it an ideal spot for those with a sweet tooth. The French bakery had delicious tarts, tiramisu, and chocolate cake.
  • Private Restrooms
    • The availability of private restrooms is a plus, especially for those who prefer more secluded facilities (which I think we can all agree are better than public beach restrooms).
  • Wine Pairing
    • Guests can enjoy wine pairing with their meal by simply asking their server. The server we had was very knowledgeable on the type of wines the restaurant served along with the best pairings for their dishes.

Cons:

  • Inconsistent Food Quality
    • While your dining experience might be enjoyable, the main courses varied in quality. Our food was delicious however, some of the neighboring tables had alternate experiences with the food.
  • Average Drinks
    • It was nice to have wine parings however their mixed drinks, including the Bloody Mary and Mimosa, were merely okay in terms of flavor and mixing quality.
  • Pigeon Interruptions
    • As the second-floor seating was outside, the presence of pigeons around outdoor tables was a bit disruptive to the dining experience. They seemed to interrupt neighboring tables more than ours but it was still an overall nuisance.
  • Heavy Dishes
    • If you are looking for healthier or lighter options, the menu does lean towards heavier dishes, which might not suit everyone with limited diverse options.

Overall, C’est La Vie is a charming seaside dining spot celebrated for its warm service and great desserts. Offering stunning beachfront views from its second-floor seating area, it’s a lovely destination for those seeking a nice dining experience. The welcoming service and delightful desserts are certainly highlights.

Lighthouse Café

Description: California Cuisine with a Unique Harbor View

Location: Newport Beach, CA

Pros:

  • Excellent Food and Drinks
    • The Lighthouse Café is known for its dinner, brunch, and cocktails. Over all their menu says California all the way with dishes such as the Lobster roll, lobster mac, classic burger, and more!
  • Harbor View
    • Although this restaurant isn’t directly on the beach or has a view of the horizon like the others we’ve mentioned so far, diners can still enjoy picturesque views of the harbor while dining, adding to the overall relaxing and casual ambiance.
  • Unique Ambiance
    • The restaurant’s location is within a lighthouse which adds to the unique dining environment.
  • Indoor and Outdoor Seating
    • Guests have the option to choose between indoor and outdoor seating, catering to different preferences.

Cons:

  • No Reservations
    • The restaurant does not accept reservations until the day of the dining, which might pose challenges for those seeking a guaranteed table during peak hours. They do have a waitlist which can make it easier.
  • Parking Challenges
    • Finding parking in the area can be difficult, especially during busy times. All parking is either for the harbor/local park or public parking.
  • Limited Ocean View
    • While the restaurant offers a view of the harbor, it may not provide a full view of the open ocean, which could be a drawback for some diners. If you are looking for that ocean view, stick with the restaurants mentioned earlier.

The Lighthouse Café has great food and drinks and boasts a unique setting within a lighthouse. With both indoor and outdoor seating options available, diners can savor their meals while enjoying views of the harbor. It’s a great option for those looking for a casual experience but may not fully satisfy those seeking an expansive coastal vista.
